Kath's chocolate sauce

Do you ever feel like something yummy for dessert, but you want it to be easy to make, using things you already have? Well, this is the recipe for you!

It’s a homemade chocolate sauce recipe that takes less than ten minutes to make and uses ingredients you probably already have. Serve it hot for the most decadent drizzle, or straight from the fridge for a gloriously thick topping over chocolate brownie or icecream.

This is also a great dessert option if you have people coming over – you can make the sauce ahead of time and keep it hot in an insulated teapot. Then, when it’s time for pudding, all you have to do is grab bowls, spoons and icecream and let your guests pour their own sauce on top.

Two glass sundae bowls filled with vanilla icecream and topped with a thick, fudgey chocolate sauce and a fresh cherry.

Description

I can’t take credit for this amazing recipe - it originated from a friend of my sister’s called Kath. I don’t think I have ever met Kath, but I am so glad she shared this recipe with us, as it has been a firm favourite for more than 20 years. It really is that good.

I have made a tweak to her recipe: the original says to beat the sauce as a final step before cooling it, but I have found that unnecessary, so I have omitted it here.

  1. Melt together cocoa, golden syrup, butter and water in a medium-sized saucepan over a low heat.
  2. Stir in salt, sugar and milk, then bring to the boil. Boil for five minutes, stirring regularly.
  3. Remove from the heat and add the vanilla essence, stirring until thoroughly combined.
  4. You can serve this straight away for a runny chocolate sauce, or allow it to cool for a thicker, fudgier sauce.
  5. Keep in a sealed container the fridge and use within a week (if it lasts that long!)
